Every serious puzzler eventually arrives at the same realisation: the kitchen table is not a puzzle table. It is at the wrong height, the surface is too smooth or too textured, there is nowhere to put sorted pieces without them mixing back together, and — most critically — you cannot leave a work-in-progress out when dinner needs to happen. A dedicated puzzle board or table does not just improve the experience of puzzling; for many people, it is what makes regular puzzling practically possible.
The puzzle accessory market has expanded considerably over the past five years to meet growing demand. Options now range from simple felt-covered boards under $30 to purpose-engineered puzzle tables at several hundred dollars. This guide covers the full spectrum, with recommendations at every level.
Felt-Covered Puzzle Boards: The Essential Starting Point
A puzzle board is simply a flat, portable surface with a felt or micro-fibre top. The felt grips puzzle pieces, preventing sliding, and the board itself can be moved — carefully — without disturbing assembled sections. At the budget end, these are straightforward and effective.
Ravensburger Puzzle Board (up to 1,000 pieces): Ravensburger’s own board is the most widely available option globally and provides an excellent foundation at around £15 / $20 USD. The hinged design allows it to fold for storage. The felt quality is good for the price.
Jumbo Puzzle Board (up to 1,500 pieces): Dutch brand Jumbo produces a slightly larger board (~£20 / €22) that accommodates up to 1,500-piece puzzles. Popular in European markets, available internationally online.
Puzzle Boards with Sorting Drawers
The next level up are boards that integrate sorting trays or drawers alongside the puzzle surface. These are considerably more practical for larger piece counts where sorting efficiency significantly impacts solve time.
Bits and Pieces SortRight Puzzle Board: An American-market standout with six removable sorting trays built into a felt-covered base. The trays slide out for sorting and back in during assembly. Strong construction, available in 1,000-piece and 1,500-piece sizes. RRP approximately $45–$55 USD.
Lap Puzzle Board with Cushion (various brands): For puzzlers who prefer working from a sofa or armchair, lap boards with integral cushion bases are a practical alternative. Brands including Jigboard and SunsOut produce these in the $25–$40 USD range. Not suitable for large puzzles but excellent for 500-piece builds.
Dedicated Puzzle Tables
For dedicated puzzlers, a purpose-built puzzle table is the ultimate setup. These typically feature an adjustable-height leg system, a reversible top (felt on one side, smooth surface on the other), and built-in storage drawers.
KAZOKU Puzzle Table: A Japanese-designed puzzle table with excellent build quality. The top is reversible and the height adjustable. Available through specialist puzzle retailers in the US, Europe, and increasingly in Asia. RRP approximately $200–$280 USD depending on configuration.
Jigsaw Puzzle Table by Trefl: Polish brand Trefl’s puzzle table has found a strong following in European markets. Sturdy construction, two sorting drawers, and a cover panel for in-progress work. Available across Europe at approximately €150–€180.
DIY Options: Many dedicated puzzlers build or adapt their own puzzle tables from IKEA or similar flat-pack furniture. The Kallax shelf unit with a custom felt-covered top is a popular solution in online puzzle communities — and at a fraction of the cost of dedicated puzzle furniture.
Lighting: The Overlooked Accessory
No puzzle setup is complete without adequate lighting. The standard overhead room light, positioned behind the solver, frequently creates shadows across the puzzle surface that make colour and detail assessment significantly harder. A dedicated desk lamp or LED panel positioned at a slight angle to the puzzle surface eliminates this problem. We cover lighting in detail in our Puzzle Accessories and Tools section.
